Can You Drink Distilled Water?

Distilled water is water that has been purified in the process called distillation. It involves heating to separate components of the water’s mixture based on different boiling points. This removes the impurities in the water through boiling and evaporation. If you have tried distilled water, you may have noticed that it tastes flat because it lacks metals, minerals, and other inorganic compounds that ordinary water has. The water that is collected is purer than the initial liquid. So, can you drink distilled water? Is it safer than tap water or are there any risks?

Can You Drink Distilled Water?

The answer depends but in most cases, yes. Drinking water that has been purified by distillation is cleaner and purer so it’s safe to drink. But there are some disadvantages though none that could significantly harm your body.

Distilled water that you find in the grocery store is generally fine because it’s made from drinking water. But if non-potable water from an industrial source is used and distilled, it may still contain impurities and it’s not safe for human consumption.

Risks of Drinking Distilled Water

Here are some of the risks when you drink distilled water.

1. Lack of Minerals

When you drink distilled water after a workout or heavy activity, it will not replace the minerals you lost through sweating. All additives have been removed from the water and if you only consume distilled water, your lack of minerals could pose a significant risk.

2. Change in the Electrolyte and Mineral Balance

If a person does not get proper nutrition and only drinks distilled water, they may develop acidosis because of the distilled water’s more acidic pH. It’s rare but possible.

Potential Benefits

There are also potential benefits when you drink distilled water.

  • It’s good when you are cleansing your body of impurities.
  • It can reduce risks of diseases because of waterborne pathogens.
  • It reduces the risk of consuming harmful chemicals.
